Dwarf Egyptian Mouthbrooder – Pseudocrenilabrus multicolor
The Dwarf Egyptian Mouthbrooder (Pseudocrenilabrus multicolor) is one of the most colourful and fascinating dwarf cichlids available in the hobby. Males display a dazzling array of iridescent blues, reds, golds, and greens, with a distinctive orange egg spot on the anal fin. This species is a maternal mouthbrooder, meaning the female carries and incubates the eggs in her mouth – an incredible behaviour to observe in the home aquarium.
Why Choose the Dwarf Egyptian Mouthbrooder?
- Stunning Male Colours: Iridescent blues, reds, and golds rival many larger and more expensive cichlids
- Fascinating Breeding: One of the easiest mouthbrooders to breed – watch the female carry and release free-swimming fry
- Compact Size: Reaching only 8cm (3 inches), perfect for smaller aquariums
- Hardy & Beginner-Friendly: Tolerant of a wide range of water conditions, ideal for newcomers to cichlids
- Peaceful for a Cichlid: Semi-peaceful temperament makes community setups possible

Tank Setup & Compatibility
Set up the aquarium with sand or fine gravel substrate, plenty of caves, rocks, and driftwood for hiding spots, and dense planting. Males will dig shallow pits during spawning displays. Gentle filtration and regular water changes keep these fish in top condition.
Suitable tank mates: African tetras, rainbowfish, hatchetfish, Corydoras catfish, and other peaceful to semi-aggressive species. Best kept as one male with 3–4 females (harem setup) to spread aggression.
Breeding
One of the easiest mouthbrooders to breed in captivity. The male displays to entice a female, who lays eggs in a shallow pit. She immediately picks up the eggs in her mouth and incubates them for 9–11 days before releasing free-swimming fry. Fry can be fed newly hatched brine shrimp from day one.
